n Ghana, plastic is used in large quantities but is often not disposed of properly. This leads to environmental problems, water and air pollution due to improper waste incineration and damage to agriculture. The consequences of this are not only fatal for nature, but also for people. The resulting health problems include malaria, risk of respiratory infections, heart disease and lung cancer.
We develop a comprehensive waste management system, raise awareness among community members and promote environmentally friendly behavior. Monthly community cleanups are part of our strategy. The reproducibility of the project is promoted by integrating economic and social factors.
We started with a community survey and submitted a project application to the US Embassy in Ghana. In collaboration with stakeholders, we defined clear goals. The inclusion of economic and social factors promotes reproducibility, increases the impact and makes the project interesting for international philanthropic donors.
Our measures include the introduction of color-coded garbage bags for households, the establishment of 15 waste collection points (each covering 50 households) and the operation of a central recycling plant with separation and composting facilities. At the same time, we raise awareness in the community and carry out regular clean-up operations.
We create jobs and develop skilled workers, promote public hygiene and health through awareness and education, produce organic fertilizer through composting, and advocate for environmental protection through sustainable action. Our innovative approach to waste management is also promoted in schools. Together we can rid Busua of plastic waste and promote sustainable living.
